Smoking Causes Acid Reflux

CIGARETTE SMOKING INCREASES BOTH GASTROESOPHAGEAL & LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL REFLUX EVENTS

During state-of-the-art reflux testing (ambulatory pH monitoring), the data of 656 non-smokers were compared with 111 smokers. The smokers had almost twice as much reflux in both the esophagus and in the pharynx (the throat). These data strongly suggest the association between smoking and reflux, and the need for smokers with acid reflux to quit smoking.
